Frequently asked questions about Invisalign, aligners and invisible braces
Invisalign is probably the most expensive invisible aligner teeth straightening system on the market, there are many others available that can all work.
Typical costs can vary between £4250 to £6950 for teeth straightening depending on the system or brand name used, the complexity of the case and the dental practice itself. The same brand of aligners will likely cost you more in Harley Street than anywhere else in the country as they’ll have a bigger rent bill to pay, so why pay more for the same branded product?
The best thing to do is discuss your needs with a dentist experienced in many systems.
Be wary when choosing where to have your teeth straightening goals addressed. Some clinics are limited to offering only one ‘branded’ product. Don’t feel pressured into agreeing to treatment until you have explored the alternatives. They could be significantly more affordable.

It is recommended that clear teeth straightening aligners are worn a minimum of 23 hours per day.
They are only removed when eating or drinking certain liquids that might stain the aligners. Stained aligners wouldn’t be quite so ‘invisible’ to others so your dentist will advise which types of drinks to be avoided. Likewise cleaning your teeth after meals is recommended so that staining foods also don’t affect the clarity of teeth straightening aligners.
This really depends on how far your teeth have to move to get them from where they are to where you want them to be.
Clear aligner type braces typically move two or three teeth each around half a millimetre for the two weeks each aligner is typically worn. This equates to a rate of around millimetre per month if consecutive aligners are moving the same two or three teeth.
This matches the scientific evidence for the safe speed to move teeth without causing irreversible physical damage to their roots or surrounding tissues.
So, depending on how far the teeth need to be moved and how many the total time required can be quite variable.
It should also be noted that aligner type braces cannot simultaneously move all the teeth. This means they can take longer to achieve the end goals than traditional fixed braces systems. If the priority is speed fixed brace systems that use tooth coloured components and wires should be considered as well.

Whatever type of orthodontic appliance is used to move teeth, whether it be traditional ‘train track’ type braces, removable wire and spring appliances or clear aligner systems like Invisalign, initially the teeth will not move until the forces applied to them by the system starts to soften the surrounding jaw bone. For most people this process may take between a week or two weeks. During this period the teeth ‘feel’ all that ‘force’ as an uncomfortable squeezing or pushing or pulling ‘pressure’. As soon as the bone starts to soften the pressure reduces as the teeth move under the force.
For this very reason brace wires occasionally need to be adjusted, springs tightened and aligners changed, so that the teeth are constantly put under fresh pulling and pushing forces to nudge them in the direction we’d like them to move. At each adjustment fresh force means fresh pressure on another region of solid bone and the accompanying sensations in the teeth.
But if your’e really concerned ask any teenager you spot with ‘train tracks’ on. If they can all tolerate the sensations during teeth straightening anyone can.
No brace systems are truly ‘invisible’.
The more relevant question would be; Are they ‘noticeable’?
From normal social distances orthodontic aligners are barely noticeable.
Tens of thousands of people are wearing them right now and you wouldn’t know it unless they told you.
Orthodontic aligners are made from very rigid but very thin clear plastic and they fit incredibly tightly over your teeth so they barely alter the visible dimension of your teeth to the naked eye.
If it is a concern for any patient they are also completely removable so that in any critical social situation with the particularly keen eyed they could be removed for the duration and replaced later. That’s something ‘fixed’ braces systems can’t offer.
